GTL: Ellen's Library

If you follow celebrity interior design, you know few have as impeccable taste as Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi. Known for her mad real estate skills, Ellen purchases properties, makes them beautiful, and moves along to do it again. For today's GTL I'm breaking down Ellen's library. Designed by the Los Angeles design firm of Kathleen Clements Design, whose other clients include Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, the room manages to keep that classic "library" feel while ditching the stuffiness. Since most of us don't have personal libraries in our homes, I love bringing this look into a family room or den.

First and foremost, let's tackle the wall of bookshelves. For the best bang for your buck, you can't go wrong with IKEA EXPEDIT shelving unit.  ($199)

Attach IKEA's FAS clamp spotlight to the tops of the bookcase to add that bit of industrial edge. $14.99

Now for the sofa, a classic leather tufted mama like what is shown is definitely what could be considered an investment piece. One that is well made with beautiful leather will never go out of style, and can be passed on through generations. To get the look without breaking the bank, opt for something upholstered in fabric like this Crate and Barrel Tailor Sofa. $2272.98

When it comes to the rug, choose a colour that makes you happy. Since the room is so neutral, you can easily dictate your palette through the rug choice. Below is the Gabrielle Persian Style Rug in blue from Pottery Barn. A 5 x 8 will run you $640.82. Another great place to find rugs is HomeSense. Don't be discouraged if you don't find it your first trip, finding the true gems usually take a few, oh, and they're usually 50% of the price!

With the bookshelves being quite dark, lighten up your occasional tables with a warm whiskey tone. This Post and Rail coffee table from Urban Barn starts at $699.00. To mix it up, keep an eye out for an antique piece to add some personality to the space.

Style your shelves with your favourite books, add a cozy throw blanket, and finish the looks with some global inspired accessories.

Happy Decorating!
